Wagner: Parsifal - Vickers, Ericson, Hotter, Stewart, Neidlinger; Knappertsbusch. Bayreuth, 1964

$18.95

Description:

Few conductors are as instantly linked to a single work as Hans Knappertsbusch is to Parsifal. Any discussion of this opera’s interpretation inevitably includes his name. Knappertsbusch had a singular ability to stretch time without losing momentum—rather than feeling sluggish, his pacing creates the profound sensation that time itself has come to a standstill.

Jon Vickers takes on the title role, bringing the same visceral intensity to Parsifal’s suffering that he brought to the many other tragic figures her portrayed. Much like his Tristan, Vickers makes the character’s torment deeply felt in a way few tenors can match. Hans Hotter, in his later years, uses the burnished quality of his voice to powerful effect as Gurnemanz, blending his legendary Lieder artistry into a performance filled with nuance and quiet introspection. Thomas Stewart, at his peak in 1964, delivers a portrayal of Amfortas that is both virile and tormented.

As Kundry, Barbro Ericson brings a more aloof and enigmatic quality in Act I and early Act II compared to Irene Dalis' interpretation. However, as Kundry undergoes her transformation, stirred by Parsifal’s compassion for Amfortas, Ericson gradually reveals the character’s inner turmoil, making her feel more human.

With an outstanding cast and excellent sound quality, this performance stands as a testament to Knappertsbusch’s unparalleled connection to Parsifal.
