Wagner: Parsifal - Jerusalem, Vejzovic, Sotin, Weikl, Mazura; Stein. Bayreuth, 1979

$18.95

Description:

This performance presents a remarkable accounting of Parsifal, featuring several standout performances. Siegfried Jerusalem brings youthful lyricism to the title role. While his dramatic moments occasionally push the limits of his instrument, veiling its lyrical qualities, his overall interpretation remains engaging. One wonders how he might have fared had he chosen a more restrained approach in the more intense moments. Hans Sotin, who defined the role of Gurnemanz from the 1970s to the 1990s, brings poised elegance to the role without resorting to the "Bayreuth bark" many of his colleagues employed. Franz Mazura's Klingsor is particularly compelling, presenting a portrayal that goes beyond the typical villainous archetype. His ability to evoke sympathy, especially in his description of being ostracized by the holy order of knights, adds complexity to the character.
