This Lohengrin is the oldest complete performance of an opera that I have. However, this recording is much more than just an archival document as both the sound and performances are remarkably fresh. Marjorie Lawrence is the main draw as Otrud, and her steely voice and dynamic stage presence make for some very exciting singing, particularly the curse (See the clip below) René Maison's Lohengrin is able to both float the heady lyrical moments as well as make an impact in the more declamatory parts, bringing to mind Sandor Konya. Fritz Busch leads a brisk performance. The sound is surprisingly good for the era.
