This is a surprisingly excellent Walkure; I was not expecting it to be so great. Gielen leads a very moving performance and gets the most out of his Swedish forces. Bjorling is a fine Wotan and Nilsson is a great Brunhilde. The sound is very good for a live performance from 1963. Don't hesitate to try this.

I bought this recording largely on the strength of Mr Reynolds’s review below, and concur with every word. Hard to believe that sound this good comes from 1963, and embarrassing to find that Hoiseth and Tyren (both magnificent) were until now completely absent from my collection. I wonder if Tyren ever performed Sarastro. Nilsson is at her imperious best, projecting character as well as complete vocal control. Orchestral weaknesses are audible, particularly in the horn and oboe sections, but are unlikely to disturb the listener for long. This is unmissable - and makes one wonder whether this was part of a complete cycle. Andy, once again, puts Wagnerians hugely in his debt.

If the enthusiastic reviews already written about this performance haven't persuaded you to get it, I can only hope my comments will do so. It's that good. All the singers are excellent. No one wobbles or squalls. They're all involved in their roles and know exactly what they're supposed to do. Nilsson sounds the wild Valkyrie to the life in her opening "Ho-jo-to-ho!" and she develops into a mature, feeling woman as the opera progresses. Bjorling sings Wotan with a steady, sure voice that commands authority and yet can melt your with his farewell in the last act: true Wagnerian bel canto. The twins are very well taken and support the singers' high reputations. Hoiseth sounds much better here as Siegmund than he did as Radames in Aida with Nilsson (also available from Opera Depot) where he was clearly indisposed. He is passionate, but loving - no wonder Sieglinde falls in love with him.Meyers is a terrific Fricka, Tyren a frightening and yet beautiful Hunding. The Valkyrie ensemble includes Berit Lindholm as Helmwige and Barbro Ericson as Siegrune, both of whom would feature in Solti's and Karajan's studio sets of this opera. Gielen leads a spirited, swift performance that never drags or sounds pretentious. He conducts an uncut performance too!The sound is excellent throughout the nearly four hour playing time. If you love Wagner, Walkure, or are fans of the singers, get this. You won't hear Wagner singing like this in any opera house today!

Even if you have several performances of Die Walkure in your collection you will want to hear this one. The cast is close to ideal with tenor Kolbjorn Hoiseth the real surprise as Siegmund. His is a more lyric voice than usually heard in this role but the youthful timbre and vigor of the performance are truly special. Ase Nordmo Lovberg, usually a rather dull interpreter, is here fresh voiced and more involved dramatically while Arne Tyren as Hunding has the darkest most sinister instrument you are likely toever hear in this role, he scared me. As for the rest, they are all in superb form under Michael Gielen's assured conducting, and with all in excellent sound, this performance does Stockholm proud.
