Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
This precious document, recorded in pristine sound, offers a rare and invaluable glimpse into Wagnerian performance tradition in the early 20th century—just 55 years after Wagner's death. It's entirely possible that members of the audience considered him a contemporary composer. Karl Böhm leads with a keen sense of structure and romantic flexibility, drawing remarkable precision from the strings of the Dresden Staatskapelle, who play with an Italianate portamento style that has since all but disappeared. The cast is strong throughout, with Hans-Hermann Nissen standing out in particular. His Hans Sachs is shaped with rich tone and a deep connection to the text, making for a performance of great stature and subtlety.

Wonderful Momento of a Long Gone Time and Style!
Though it's written on the cover down in the left corner, purchasers should understand that this recording is only Act 3, recorded in the studio in 1938. That year may cause some to avoid this set as it was recorded during the Nazi occupation of Germany (and shortly Europe).The cast is terrific. Nissen's warm, beautiful bass-baritone falls like balsam on contemporary ears so conditioned to the wobbling and barking of most of today's singers. Ralf's mellifluous tone and ringing high notes make his Walther a true musical hero. In the little bit she gets to sing, Teschemacher is an Eva to treasure. Fuchs is an unexaggerated, funny Beckmesser whose croaking out of the ridiculous high A at the end of his scene with Sachs made me laugh out loud. The supporting singers, chorus, and orchestra are all superb under Böhm's steady hand.This transfer is excellent too, pitched correctly and with very little surface noise. If you love Meistersinger, you must hear this classic performance.

Wonderfull And Superb Sounding!
This recording could easily be a top contender in live recordings from the golden age of pre war Wagner.My only regret is that we only hear Act 3.Get it anyway!!
