This is an authoritative Meistersinger conducted by someone who apparently won a conductor's prize tied with Furtwangler in their youth. It shows. The cast is excellent all round. I enjoyed particularly Schoeffler and Suthaus. For me it compares very well with Kna's 1955 Munich version with F. Frantz and is better than most.

Musically, this is one of the best Meistersingers around - it's as simple as that. Historically and politically, Hitler's last visit to Bayreuth was (I believe) in 1940. http://www.wagneroperas.com/indexwagnerbayreuthreich.htmlThis is an interesting website to view but it gives the idea that Hitler attended a performance during this run of Meistersinger - he did not but was represented by Nazi officials. It's chilling to listen to this incandescent performance...and think about the audience at the same time!
