Wagner: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (In Italian) - Taddei, Rizzoli, Infantino, Capecchi; von Matačić. Torino, 1962

$18.95

Description:

Although this performance is presented in Italian, it should not be dismissed as a mere curiosity. On the contrary, it stands as a noteworthy interpretation, largely due to the insightful leadership of Lovro von Matačić. Despite some minor issues, such as a missed entrance, the orchestra plays with remarkable sensitivity. The singers, in particular, bring a lyricism to Wagner's soaring melodies that recalls the superb artistry of the La Scala orchestra in the 1950 Furtwängler *Ring* Cycle. Giuseppe Taddei offers a lighter-grained approach to the role of Sachs, navigating its pacing with skill while maintaining delicacy and charm. Renato Capecchi's portrayal of Beckmesser is vocally matched to Taddei's Sachs, yet he successfully balances the character's antihero qualities with those of a lovable comic foil. Boris Christoff's sonorous bass is a fitting choice for the role of Veit Pogner. While the initial master exhibited some distortion and was slightly under-pitched, these issues have been corrected.
