Der fliegende Holländer
This performance caught my attention for the rare opportunity to hear the great and under-recorded Gladys Kuchta as Senta. Even after transitioning to the most demanding Wagnerian roles, Kuchta demonstrates remarkable vocal control, handling Senta's delicate passages with finesse, especially in the Act II duet with the Dutchman.
When power is required, Kuchta delivers with astonishing force, most notably in her aria and the opera's climactic conclusion. Edmund Hurshell, while slightly vocally dried out, adds an intriguing complexity to the Dutchman, even if his appeal to Senta feels somewhat perplexing. Dimiter Uzunov is effective in the thankless role of Erik, while Grace Hoffman brings an element of luxury casting as Marie.

Excellent Hollander in Excellent Sound!
Gladys Kuchta is probably the best known name here and she lives up to her considerable reputation. If she doesn't quite have the intensity and blazing top of Rysanek, she is nonetheless a first-rate, memorable Senta. Edmund Hurshell and Kunizaku Ohashi are not widely known names, but they each deliver more than respectable performances (neither made many studio recordings). Usunov was on hand to sing Calaf in Turandot and Hoffman the Nurse in Frau Ohne Schatten so it's not surprising they were hired to sing these roles as well. I will probably never learn to love Usunov's timbre, but in the end he is a strong Erik. Hoffman, as always, makes a dynamic presence. Roberto Kinsky leads a strong, enthusiastic performance in which the chorus distinguishes itself with clear, passionate singing.The sound is excellent broadcast stereo. The disc break is a little infelicitous, but there my quibbles end.
