This performance caught my attention for the rare opportunity to hear the great and under-recorded Gladys Kuchta as Senta. Even after transitioning to the most demanding Wagnerian roles, Kuchta demonstrates remarkable vocal control, handling Senta’s delicate passages with finesse, especially in the Act II duet with the Dutchman.
When power is required, Kuchta delivers with astonishing force, most notably in her aria and the opera’s climactic conclusion. Edmund Hurshell, while slightly vocally dried out, adds an intriguing complexity to the Dutchman, even if his appeal to Senta feels somewhat perplexing. Dimiter Uzunov is effective in the thankless role of Erik, while Grace Hoffman brings an element of luxury casting as Marie.
The sound quality is very good.
