Pros:

  • Hans Hotter pretty much owned the role of Wotan at Bayreuth throughout the 1950s. Although his interpretation would deepen over the years, the demands of the role would eventually take its toll on his voice. In this performance from 1953, he is still in excellent voice and effortlessly conveys the characters take-no-prisoners approach to leadership.
  • Ludwig Weber delivers one of the most sympathetic readings of Fasolt's monologue I have ever heard.
  • Erich Witte and Paul Kuen deliver fine performances of Loge and Mime. No doubt Gerhard Stolze, who was singing the lesser role of Froh, was taking notes...

Cons:

  • None to mention.
