Wagner: Das Rheingold - Hotter, Malaniuk, Witte, Neidlinger, Weber, Greindl, Stolze, Uhde; C. Krauss. Bayreuth, 1953

$9.95

Description:

Hans Hotter pretty much owned the role of Wotan at Bayreuth throughout the 1950s. Although his interpretation would deepen over the years, the demands of the role would eventually take a toll on his voice. In this 1953 performance, he is still in excellent voice and effortlessly conveys the character’s take-no-prisoners approach to leadership. Ludwig Weber delivers one of the most sympathetic readings of Fasolt’s monologue I have ever heard. Erich Witte and Paul Kuen are both effective as Loge and Mime, respectively—and one imagines Gerhard Stolze, singing the lesser role of Froh, was quietly taking notes.
