Pauline Tinsley enlivens a fairly provincial performance of Verdi’s first masterpiece, Nabucco. Her Abigaille is big, passionate, and, with the exception of one unfortunately cracked note, beautifully delivered. Jan Deskman’s Nabucco is another solid performance. He has a booming, beautiful voice, though his dramatic commitment is a little lacking. The rest of the cast ranges from very good to passable, the standout being Peter van der Berg’s Zaccaria. Chorus work is strong, the orchestral performance merely standard-issue. The sound favors the soloists over the chorus.
