Verdi: La Forza del destino (In German) - Corelli, Rosvaenge, Rehm, Adam; Löwlein. Berlin, 1958
$8.95
Description:
This German-language performance of La Forza del destino brings together an appealing cast of singers whose careers rarely intersected with Verdi—making this recording all the more intriguing. Helge Rosvaenge, heard here at the age of 60, may no longer possess the lyricism that defined his earlier years, but he still delivers a vigorous, dramatically alert Alvaro. His performance is marked by technical assurance and a compelling stage presence.
Maria Corelli, whose background remains elusive despite a strong showing in this performance, is a surprisingly effective Leonora. While her soprano may lack the plushness associated with the role’s most famous interpreters, she sings with admirable security and abandon, shaping the part with conviction. Theo Adam takes on Padre Guardiano, and while his voice resonates more freely in the upper register than the lower, the timbre of his bass-baritone suits the role well and adds welcome gravitas.
The sound is fair to good. Unfortunately, the overture is missing from this recording.
