Verdi: La battaglia di Legnano - Corelli, Stella, Bastianini, Stefanoni; Gavazzeni. Milano, 1961

Listen to a Sample:

Written during the galley years, La Battaglia di Legnano surely does not have the vision of Rigoletto or La Traviata.  This is more of a singer's opera.   Listen to the sample below of "La pia materna mano" as sung by Franco Corelli.  The melody is simple yet memorable and allows Corelli to work his vocal magic.  He is joined my fellow magicians Antonietta Stella and Ettore Bastianini in this performance from La Scala.  Stella manages both the sublime and dramatic flawlessly.  The sound is very good
