Don Carlo

In the 1970s, newly rediscovered music from the Paris premiere of Don Carlo sparked a trend of presenting the opera complete — a stark contrast to earlier, heavily cut performances. During his legendary tenure at La Scala, Claudio Abbado mounted this production with a cast originally slated to include Mirella Freni and José Carreras. However, contractual obligations with Karajan required replacements — and what replacements they were! Plácido Domingo takes on the daunting title role with remarkable energy and commitment, turning what some consider a thankless part into a gripping portrayal. Margaret Price sings Elisabetta with a voice of impressive size and astonishing purity of tone, making the role feel tailor-made for her. Known for her dramatic intensity, Elena Obraztsova does not disappoint here; her wild, electrifying performance — especially her show-stopping "O Don fatale" — leaves a powerful impression. The sound is very good, though a persistent hiss is audible throughout.

Good recording, one quibble

Very enjoyable, with good sound quality given the performance date. It would be nice for the recording's metadata to be available on services such as MusicBrainz, so that various software apps can automatically catalogue the discs.

Definitely for the singers....Ah ! Margaret Price !

Quite pleasant, more for the memory than for the pleasure of the audition as the sound quality is not very good. Yet, most enjoyable !

Don Carlo - La Scala , Price, Domingo, Abbado

I remember watching this on BBC TV in the late 70s when we had regular arts broadcasts of stature. It was an important evening for the extra music being performed and also wonderful to hear Margaret Price, underused and undervalued. It was a very exciting performance and I would love to know if there was a video around. Bruson is superb and I sometimes marvel that Domingo can squeeze out yet another high lying phrase.
