Good Performance in Listenable Sound!
The young Eva Marton is the selling point of this set and she is terrific. Her timbre isn't always perfectly steady (it never was), but her enthusiasm, rhythmic alertness, and exciting high notes count for a lot. She also has no difficulty with the coloratura. The other singers are all good without being exceptional. I like the energy Gardelli imparts to his forces in what was then a very rare offering. The sound is listenable, but honesty insists I should mention the worn tape with its wow and flutter during the early part of the opera. The disc division is carelessly done, separating Ezio's aria from his cabaletta (it would've fit on the first disc) and the arbitrary cuepoints (the beginning of the third act is buried in Disc 2, track 4). There are two unadvertised fillers at the end of disc 2: Aida's two arias sung by Marton (available complete on Opera Depot). For Eva Marton fans.
