Hearing Eva Marton in her younger days one understands her growing reputation. Her Aida is a passionate, assertive woman who only pretends to be a doormat. Her singing is steady and full, only lacking finesse at the extreme top. She achieves all the high notes here (including an accurate top C in "O patria mia"), but gets off of them quickly. She doesn't have a solid piannissimo, a handicap for any Verdi soprano. All the same, this is an important voice.Domingo is in very good voice and makes a handsome Radames. Nave has a solid top, a rich lower register, and clearly knows the traditions of the role. Her middle register is attractive, but sometimes doesn't penetrate the orchestration. Were she singing today she'd probably be cleaning up as this type of Italian mezzo is an endangered species today. Pedro Farres is an exciting Amonasro with a solid baritone and Dimiter Petkov makes an intimidating Ramfis. Gatto's conducting is solid and at one with the singers.The sound is from a broadcast source so all the voices can be clearly heard over the orchestra. You'll need to adjust the volume a few times and there is some hum and background hiss (was the source a videotape?), but nothing serious interferes with the listening. Fans of Marton should definitely get this if only to hear what she was capable of before she took on all those Turandots a decade later!
