Verdi: Aida - Galvany, Stapp, Bondino, Opthof; Barbini. Winnipeg, 1975

$9.95

Description:

This recording highlights two exceptional American singers who left behind only a handful of recordings to showcase their talent. Marisa Galvany possessed a voice that defied traditional classification. With a powerful chest register that could suggest a mezzo and a fearless top capable of interpolating high E-flats in roles like Abigaille or Odabella, her voice was both unique and versatile. While her voice was not not traditionally Italianate, she had a solid grasp of the Italian style and a technique that allowed her to excel in even the most demanding Verdi roles.

Olivia Stapp, though a soprano by trade, takes on the role of Amneris. Her voice pairs beautifully with the character's fiery temperament, resulting in an electrifying performance.

Ruggero Bondino delivers a sturdy Radamès. Cornelius Opthof, a remarkable baritone whose career flourished in regional U.S. companies and the New York City Opera, shines as Amonasro, offering a performance of great skill and presence.

The sound quality is good.
