This generous disc of excerpts from Aida (78 minutes) contains the following:Act 1 , s.1- most of the opening through "Celeste Aida"Act 1, s.2 - second half of Temple SceneActs 3 and 4 - almost complete except for a few snippets in each act, probably where the tape had to be turned overIt's always good to hear Shuard in one of her roles not well-documented elsewhere. Here she is heard in all of Aida's big moments (except the duet with Amneris and the finale of Act 2). She lives up to her reputation as a fine singing actress with a steady, beautiful voice, used intelligently and musically. She successfully negotiates the difficult top C in "O patria mia" and floats some lovely soft high notes later on. Vickers certainly sounds the hero. He fudges the penultimate B-flat of "O terra, addio", but otherwise is very effective. Elkins gets the entire Judgement Scene and shows her worth. Shaw sings his big scene with Aida with ferocity. The sound is good, the voices slightly recessed, but always audible over the orchestra.If you're a Shuard fan as I am you'll enjoy this disc a lot.
