Pros:

  • Amy Shuard gives a masterclass in Verdi singing, combining opulence of tone with astonishing vocal control.
  • Jon Vickers is heard at his prime as Radamès.
  • It is nice to get to hear Australian mezzo-soprano Margreta Elkins in a substantial role. Although she may lack the fiery temperament of some of her colleagues, she acquits the role of Amneris with security and finesse.

Cons:

  • The sound is slightly muffled.
