The Midsummer Marriage
Michael Tippett was spoiled by a stellar cast for the World Premiere of his opera The Midsummer Marriage, and he doesn't squander the opportunity to tailor-craft vocal lines that give each of the leads a chance to show off their considerable talents. A young Joan Sutherland shines bright in the role of Jenifer. The choral writing is one of the most important components of this opera, and the forces of Covent Garden acquit the task with impressive skill.
