Eugene Onegin
Giuseppe Taddei brings his signature blend of passionate elegance to the title role in this Italian-language performance of Eugene Onegin, shaping the character with refinement and emotional restraint. His singing is both polished and deeply expressive, making for a compelling portrayal of Pushkin's conflicted hero.
Cesare Valletti, as Lensky, nearly steals the show. His aria is delivered with such lyrical grace and emotional clarity that it becomes a masterclass in Italianate phrasing—even when applied to Tchaikovsky.

Great Performance in Excellent Sound!
Eugene Onegin goes very well in Italian, especially as delivered by this cast. Taddei is a more bullish, hard-headed Onegin than we usually hear, but that makes his condescending reply to Tatiana all the more believable. Carteri is a lovely Tatiana, her transformation from naive young woman to a mature adult convincingly done. Valletti is superb and the other singers all first-rate. Sanzogno wastes no time and leads a vigorous, clean performance that is most enjoyable. There is some surface noise, but it is minor and never gets in the way. The sound itself is excellent, the pitch of the tape just right.All lovers of this opera should hear this performance!

a must have Onegin
The Italian language sits very happily with this very Russian opera. There is confusion on the sleeve over the date of the performance. It sports 1977, 1963 and 1953. The correct date is 1953. Rosanna Cateri is Tatiana. She had a distinctively beautiful voice. Her uncovered forwardly produced sound with a touch of steel, is true to the sound of the great Russian interpreters of the time. Marvellous diction! Cesarean Valletti is an ideal Lenski. The great baritone guiseppe Taddei, for me here is a problem. In my view the greatest baritone to come out of Italy in the post war years, his big solid bronze voice is the voice of Simone, Iago, Scarpia not really the ideal instrument to creat this vapid careless young Onegin. However, for me a Taddei performance is always is something I want to hear. His long career in 1953 was at it's prime. This Rai Milan radio performance is of studio sound quality.
