Elektra
This performance of Elektra is notable for the presence of two singers not especially associated with the opera: Heather Harper as Chrysothemis and Kerstin Meyer as Klytämnestra. Harper’s voice lacks the steely edge often associated with Strauss, yet the auburn color of her tone and its distinctly Mozartian poise suggest a young woman driven toward emotional desperation by the grim circumstances surrounding her. Meyer, for her part, avoids exaggerated theatrics, instead offering a more inward account of Klytämnestra’s terror-laden dreams.
In the title role, Danica Mastilovic meets the formidable demands of Elektra with stamina and commitment. While the performance may not place her among the most celebrated interpreters of the part, the accomplishment of sustaining the role’s punishing vocal and dramatic requirements remains considerable. In the pit, Rudolf Kempe brings notable clarity and a sense of dramatic impetus to Strauss’s score.

Excellent Performance, Turn Up the Volume!
Kempe leads this performance elegantly - yes, elegantly! - and yet with the requisite drama. Mastilovic's Elektra is a known portrayal (this is the second Elektra with her in Opera Depot's catalogue). One either likes her acidulous timbre or puts up with it for the sake of the opera. Her vibrato is slow and sometimes wobbly, but she certainly hits all the high notes accurately and on pitch and there's no denying her identification with the part. I love her laugh after Klytemnestra's second scream - not indicated in the score, but chilling. Harper sings beautifully and with an exciting top register; she always had those assets. I think Harper is a very underrated singer, too easily typecast as a Britten specialist. Was there anything she didn't sing well? Meyer sings and acts Klytemnestra very effectively and McIntyre and Lewis are excellent in their roles. We are not given a complete cast list so I will only say the other roles are taken very well. The sound is good, distortion-free broadcast mono, but you'll need to turn up the volume as the transfer level is very low,
