Her portrayal is both poised and emotionally invested, never tipping into excess. Ingvar Wixell strikes a compelling balance as Scarpia, his baritone suave yet capable of conjuring menace when needed. Unexpectedly, Lorin Maazel proves to be an insightful Puccinian, drawing nuanced phrasing and expressive detail from the orchestra while maintaining a firm grip on the dramatic pacing. The sound is excellent.
