Johanna Meier was such a good singer. She always delivered and she does so here in a performance presumably from the NYCO. Her singing is beautiful, expressive, and dramatic without overdoing anything. Her choices for Tosca's "big" moments are more restrained than some others, but never tame or casual. A classy lady indeed!Herman Malamood also has an expressive voice with ringing high notes. Carreras in the 1976 performance with Meier has more sweetness, but Malamood is a decided asset. Richard Fredericks shows again why he was so highly regarded in the opera world while he was singing. His baritone is sleek, powerful, and never wobbles. His lack of a studio recording career probably hindered his international career because, like Meier, he was always classy.The supporting singers are all excellent and on top of their roles and Giuseppe Morelli provides strong support from the pit. The sound is good enough, the voices slightly recessed, but always audible. Act Three begins with Cavaradossi's first line.I'm glad to have this souvenir of three very underrecorded singers.
