Tosca
Anna Moffo delivers a surprisingly credible Tosca, channeling her bel canto finesse into a role more commonly associated with spinto weight. Richard Fredericks is a suitably menacing Scarpia, his dark timbre lending gravity and threat to each scene.
The sound is slightly distant, and the orchestra occasionally falls short of the score's demands, but the central performances offer enough conviction to keep the drama compelling throughout.

Anna e la Tosca
A wonderful surprise. Her melting middle voice, her powerful high C's, her whole demeanor is of a romana. Her Quanto, il prezzo is said almost matter of factly. Her manner, as well as her voice obviously, place her in Carolina's coterie. Dominguez excellent. A large, bright voice, secure top register. Fredericks fine though he could color the voice, a little more nuance. Coppola really keeps things moving. A very enjoyable performance

Her first American Tosca
When I wrote Anna's biography, she explained that she would Havel liked to sing before retirement many other lirico-spinto and/or drammatico roles anch as Leonora in Trovatore, Norma, Lina, Aida and Tosca...and she sang the last the ones

A Fun Tosca in the Best Sense!
This is one of those performances that may not be musically perfect, but make one glad "pirates" exist. Moffo was rumored to be recording Tosca in the studio around this time, but it never happened. In this performance from Tampa, Florida, she is in excellent shape, more secure in her middle register than she was in the Boheme with Pavarotti two years earlier. Her top was never a problem and it sounds exciting here. This was her first time out as Tosca, but she knows the routine of the role well and acts up a storm. Rubin Dominguez was well-known on the regional circuit back in the 70's. He sings very well with ringing top notes. Whatever happened to him? Richard Fredericks is a first-rate baritone who never became a major star although he never lacked for work. It's just as well the supporting cast goes uncredited - the Sciarrone simply doesn't know his role. The orchestra is clearly unfamiliar with the opera and stubs its toes badly after Tosca's "O Scarpia, avanti a Dio!" Moffo sings the phrase with great panache - and the orchestra just doesn't come in.No matter; this performance is very enjoyable. The voices are slightly recessed, but certainly audible. You know you want this!
