La Rondine

Anna Moffo makes a compelling case for La Rondine as Puccini's most underrated score, bringing elegance, glamour, and vocal ardor to the role of Magda. Her interpretation is rich in both character and sound, offering a nuanced portrait of a woman torn between desire and convention. Henry Price lends charm and lyrical sweetness to the role of Prunier, providing a delightful counterbalance. Conductor Anton Guadagno takes a more expansive approach, often lingering over Puccini's phrases in a way that allows the singers room to breathe and luxuriate in the music, even if it means straying from the composer's intended tempi. While Beniamino Prior sounds somewhat stiff as Ruggero, the performance as a whole is deeply enjoyable and musically satisfying.

Enjoyable live performance

I supposed I didn’t get this recording earlier because I’ve had Moffo’s commercial recording for years. I also thought 1972 might be a little late for her, especially live. I was wrong! Moffo is in very good voice for this performance, and her sound is lovely. The sound quality is no better nor worse than the average recording of this type. If you’re used to “pirate” recordings, you’ll have no problem with it. I would definitely recommend it to fans of Anna Moffo.

Poor sound.

Unfortunately the sound is too poor to appreciate this performance. When will the studio recording with Moffo be reissued?
