Perhaps this isn't a Boheme to change your life, but it's very satisfying, the kind of performance that if you saw it at your local opera house you'd think your money well-spent. Raina Kabaivanska was just beginning to become known on both sides of the Atlantic when this performance took place. She is a lovely Mimi who fills out Puccini's melodies with burnished tone. If her Mimi isn't as specific or memorable as some others, she certainly provides the emotional center needed for the opera.Eugenio Fernandi is a strong Rodolfo whose top was beginning to reveal the strain of forcing his lyric voice into repertoire that was a size or two too big for him. He takes his big aria down a half-step and the top B, while there, is initially a little under pitch. He gets better as the evening progresses and is heartbreaking in the last scene which he doesn't overplay. Angel Matiello is a strong Marcello and Lia Montoya an engaging Musetta. The young Gian Piero Mastromei is exceptionally good as Schaunard and Jorge Algorta, a staple for years at the Teatro Colon, gets the biggest applause of the evening for his coat aria in the last act. Juan Emilio Martini keeps everyone together in this beautiful performance. The sound is excellent. Boheme nuts and fans of the singers should get this.
