Pavarotti was only 26 or so when he made his debut in this performance of La Boheme. Of course he would refine his interpretation and singing over the next decade, but the golden tone and exciting top notes are already in place. No wonder the audience goes nuts over him (he gets "Bravos!" after his splendid high C in the big aria.)The other singers are all very good, perhaps not as refined as some others, but always in the spirit of the opera. They were all natively Italian or spoke Italian fluently and that shows in their spirited responses to each other. Alberta Pellegrini is a lovely Mimi. The Marcello and Musetta are delightful, the Schaunard's "Marcello, e spirata!" just before the end sounds especially horrified. Molinari-Pradelli holds the performance together well.The sound has been correctly pitched which is a good thing. What's not so good are the irritating pauses between tracks that should've been edited out. There are also a few drop outs here and there where tiny bits of music go missing. Whether that's a problem from the master tape I don't know.Any Pavarotti fan should hear this, if only to be reminded of how special he was, even at this early date. It doesn't hurt that the entire performance is very enjoyable too.
