Description:
This performance of La Bohème presents a fascinating paradox: two sensational leads set against the backdrop of a chorus and orchestra that can only be described as provincial. Such was often the case with regional opera in the 1970s—what the ensemble may have lacked in polish was more than offset by the caliber of the principal singers. Luciano Pavarotti offers an exquisitely sung and emotionally committed Rodolfo, culminating in a heart-wrenching final scene where his spoken lines carry devastating weight. Anna Moffo matches him with a beautifully shaded Mimì, her sultry tone hinting at the deep passion beneath the character’s reserved exterior. Though she occasionally scoops—a trait that became more pronounced later in her career—it hardly detracts from the overall impact of her performance. Even conductor Carlo Moresco gets caught up in the moment, occasionally singing along—an endearing, if unorthodox, touch that speaks to the passion of the evening.
