Mozart: La Clemenza di tito - Hollweg, Berganza, Moser, Auger, Rydl; Rudel. Wien, 1976

$8.95

Description:

Teresa Berganza delivers a standout performance as Sesto—so much so that one might wonder why the opera wasn’t named after the character. Her singing combines pinpoint coloratura, expressive phrasing, and a touching, youthful vulnerability. Edda Moser is a commanding Vitellia, reminding us how underappreciated she remains. Arleen Auger is radiant as Servilia, adding further vocal distinction to the cast.

Werner Hollweg in the title role and Kurt Rydl as Publio both contribute strong performances, but the evening clearly belongs to the women.

The sound is generally clear, though an intermittent buzzing can be heard in some sections.
