Gabriel Bacquier (still alive at this writing) would get to record his anti-hero for Bonynge later in the decade. It is still well-sung, but lacks the imagination and sheer fun of his portrayal here. His diction is excellent, his voice more honeyed, less hectoring, than it would later become.Stich-Randall had a very good night when this was recorded. Her Anna is passionately determined throughout the performance and her singing immaculate. Vartenissian is a fiery Elvira with an excellent voice. I was very glad Erede included "Mi tradi" for her. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Adani's Zerlina, having always thought she was good, but not great. Her voice can occasionally be a little unsteady, but here she sings with such intent and purpose it doesn't matter. Her runs in "Batti, batti" are immaculate, her "Vedrai" comforting and seductive in just the desired manner. She was natively Italian and it shows.Panerai is a wonderful Leporello, relishing his odd character. Alva sings his two arias splendidly, enhanced by clear diction. Tadeo and Trama are both terrific as well. Again, it doesn't hurt that they're both Italians. Erede leads a fleet, occasionally rough performance. There are a few ensemble problems, missed or late entrances, and some confusion in the recitatives (the prompter can be heard trying to sort things out). Overall the sound is very good, if a little uneven as to recorded levels.Don Giovanni lovers will want this.
