Exciting Debut for Souliotis!
Elena Souliotis was one of those singers who blossomed young. Here at 22 her voice is very full and developed, her characterization right on the money. No harbingers of the vocal issues to come can be heard. Andy also has a Santuzza she did under the young Muti only six years later; I haven't heard it yet. Her studio recording of this opera with Del Monaco does show some wear-and-tear on the voice although it is not the disaster it has been reported to be. She leaves out the final C of the part, but that may stem from the staging rather than a vocal issue.Jaja is a sexy Turridu. He sings extremely well, sobs convincingly (and not too much), and deserves the cheers he gets. Were he singing today... Verlinghieri is a macho, frightening Alfio who also sings well. There are no disgraces here: all the singers know their parts as does the chorus. Their reaction when Turiddu bites Alfio's ear is searing, just how one imagines it would have been. Patane leads an effective performance that manages not to sound routine.The sound is very good, the singers balanced well with the orchestra and always audible. For Mascagni fans or fans of the singers.

Wonderful. All one can hope for in a live performance. Souliotis in her prime, ably supported by Gianni Jaia and Silvano Verlinghieri.
