Frequent surface noise and an intermittent electronic hum mar what is otherwise a commendable (if mysterious in origin) performance of this lively early Verdi opera. He's still very much under the influence of Donizetti at this point but Giovanna d'Arco is enjoyable on its own, vigorous terms. Flaviano Labo and Mario Sereni are wholly admirable as lover and father, and Katia Ricciarelli gives one of her spunkiest efforts. Gone are the *larmes de la void* that were her default setting. It's an enjoyable way to pass 100 minutes.
