This performance brings together Antonietta Stella and Franco Corelli in Andrea Chénier, an opera they would later record in a near-perfect rendition of Giordano’s masterpiece. Here, both singers are in fresher voice, energized by the live audience. Ettore Bastianini adds both menace and heartbreak to Gérard, rounding out a trio of outstanding lead performances. The sound is excellent, though there is a ten-second break in “La mamma morta” as well as in the following Act III chorus scene.
