Description:
Experiencing a great singing actor in opera is always unforgettable, and, in my view, this experience is even more profound when they are performing in their native language. It’s unfortunate that opera in the vernacular has fallen out of favor with the advent of supertitles, as it creates a unique connection between performer and audience that is otherwise lost. Additionally, a singer performing in their own language brings a deeper, more instinctive connection to the text that even the most skilled polyglot cannot replicate.
If you’re skeptical, I urge you to listen to this recording of Andrea Chénier. The singers deliver impeccable diction, and one can hear echoes of British theatrical traditions, reaching back to Shakespearean elocution. Charles Craig portrays Chénier with a compelling blend of sweetness and power. Victoria Elliot takes on Maddalena, and while her voice may not have the lushness of Renata Tebaldi or Antonietta Stella, she captures the character’s youthful essence beautifully, without sacrificing intensity during the dramatic moments.
Peter Glossop is arguably the standout of the cast. His voice in this 1959 performance has a freshness and vitality that was less apparent in later years. A remarkable recording that highlights the unique magic of opera sung in the vernacular.
