Don Rodrigo

It's intriguing that Plácido Domingo's breakout role came in the form of a 20th-century expressionist opera rather than the lyrical Italian repertoire for which he would later be so renowned. He manages to leave a lasting impression in a work that demands dramatic singing across extremes of vocal range. Domingo delivers a performance as virile and intense as the one he would later bring to Otello. Ginastera's music feels deeply influenced by the unsettling musical landscape Berg created in Wozzeck, particularly through its intricate Verwandlungen. I've included some rare excerpts featuring Domingo as a bonus.

INTERSTING CURIOSITY

This is an important recording. Ginastera's work was one of the first performed at the NYCO when they moved to Lincoln Center. It also established Placido Domingo as a star. The work itself is one that one must work at to enjoy but it is definitely loud and quite dramatic. The cast is very good with Domingo standing out. It is good to have a recording of Crader, as she sang some important roles with NYCO during those years. The sound is pretty good for being an in-house recording but not ideal. I'm glad to own this recording for the work itself and for represent the wonderful old NYCO (much missed).
