It's intriguing that Plácido Domingo's breakout role came in the form of a 20th-century expressionist opera rather than the lyrical Italian repertoire for which he would later be so renowned. He manages to leave a lasting impression in a work that demands dramatic singing across extremes of vocal range. Domingo delivers a performance as virile and intense as the one he would later bring to Otello. Ginastera's music feels deeply influenced by the unsettling musical landscape Berg created in Wozzeck, particularly through its intricate Verwandlungen. The sound quality is solid, and I've included some rare excerpts featuring Domingo as a bonus.
