Prince Igor
I was drawn to this recording because it offered a rare chance to hear Ghena Dimitrova just before she would take the world by storm. And Dimitrova does not disappoint. During her prime, her voice seemed to have endless reserves of power delivered with an ease that you don't expect from a singer with a voice her size. Equally impressive was her ability to finesse soft singing, which she does exquisitely during her Act IV aria.

Exciting Performance in Excellent Sound!
I haven't heard Prince Igor more than a few times all the way through and every time it has been in a different version. I'm not exactly sure which version is represented here though I can tell you there's no Act Three. The singers are all excellent. I assume Ghena Dimitrova is the raison d'etre for this release and her singing is not only exciting (huge high notes!), but technically accomplished too. There's not a whole lot of her here; in fact, you could say that about all the main characters: they're just not around very long. Sabin Markov sings his big aria extremely well with a smooth, sable-like baritone. Petar Petrov is a charming and yet frightening Konchak with another fine voice although his low notes are weak. Neli Bojkova sings Konchakovna's music with a rich, sexy mezzo. If Petko Marinov doesn't have the most mellifluous tone, he sings ardently and deserves the warm applause he receives from the audience for his aria. Stoyon Popov is a humorous Galitsky although I wouldn't want to be on his bad side. The choral sopranos are sometimes a little wobbly; both chorus and orchestra seem to be enjoying themselves. Ivan Marinov leads a strong performance that I would appreciate even more if I knew specifically what they were all singing about (I couldn't find a libretto and translation). The sound is from an excellent broadcast tape. If you enjoy Russian opera or this opera in particular, you'll love this set.
