$9.95
Description:
I had no idea what to expect when I came across this recording, except that regardless of how the work turned out, I could at least count on some excellent singing. I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable this opera is. Arthur Benjamin's musical approach may not be the most innovative, but he demonstrates a clear understanding of how to craft a well-paced drama with exciting moments and memorable melodies.
Amy Shuard is particularly compelling as Madame Defarge, while Heather Harper excels as Lucie Mannette and Alexander Young shines as Charles Darnay. This opera seems overdue for a revival, and anyone who enjoys the novel will likely appreciate this musical adaptation. The sound quality is good.
