Great performance marred by sub-par sound (even for a live performance)
I have been listening to “pirate” recordings for almost 50 years and come to them with very different expectations than I have for commercial recordings. I also acknowledge that the quality of recordings made from the audience can vary a lot. So, I was not prepared to be especially bothered by the sound quality of this recording. Unlike another reviewer, my ear did not adjust. There were times when the voices came through better than others, but for most of the opera, the voices sound frustratingly distant. I would treasure this recording if it was the only one available of Joan Sutherland in this role, or if I found her live performance significantly better than her studio recordings. In my opinion, Dame Joan was amazingly consistent whether singing live or in a recording studio. As I listened to this recording, I kept asking myself “Why?” The next time I want to hear her sing Amina, I will pull out one of her commercial recordings, or a live recording with better sound. Clearly some really enjoyed this recording, so surely others will as well. I wish I could say the same.

Stunning Performance from Sutherland and Company!
Let's get the sound question out of the way upfront: it isn't great, but the ear adjusts. It is also pitched correctly. Certainly Sutherand and Pavarotti sound like themselves - and what sounds they make!Sutherland is a miracle. Singing in her homeland in front of people who adore her she is relaxed and in her best voice. The coloratura is dispatched with casual ease, the acuti thrilling, the trills perfect. She and Pavarotti give us some of the most beautiful singing I've ever heard. Pavarotti is equally impressive. This was recorded before he stopped working while he was striving to make a career. None of the mannerisms are here and all what made him famous is. Harwood is a treat as Lisa. After her second act aria, someone in the audience shouts out "Brava, Elisabeth!" In fact, the tapist or somebody nearby is very enthusiastic throughout. The applause is deafening! Rouleau is also first-rate. Any Sutherland or Pavarotti fan should have this - it is truly historical.
