Although Amy Shuard was a singer whom I have admired for many years, every singer has their limits and occasionally Shuard pushes the limits of her lyric instrument. Still she sings intelligently and highlights Brünnhilde's youth and vulnerability. Accordingly she doesn't play Act II as a vengeful Valkyrie but as scared teenager, and if her voice at times buckles under the pressures of the role it adds to the desperation of the character. Wolfgang Windgassen, on the other hand, seems much more comfortable in the role of Siegfried. Gottlob Frick's Hagen is beyond compare. Pure evil. Georg Solti seems to relish the infinite color and detail of Götterdämmerung more than any of the other operas in this cycle and at times ignites the orchestra into a frenzy. The sound is fair to good.
