The years following the reopening of Bayreuth after World War II proved to be some of the most exciting in the history of the Festival and provided an important training ground for the next generation of great Wagnerians including Martha Mödl, Wolfgang Windgassen and Josef Greindl. Sadly, Martha Mödl's career did not endure like her colleagues but in the brief period of her vocal prime she delivered performances unrivaled for their intensity as well as dramatic integrity. And she does just that in this recording. Wolfgang Windgassen's Siegfried is fresh and brash and Josef Greindl delivers a black-toned Hagen. Regina Resnik's Third Norn is an added luxury. The sound is excellent.
