Pros:
- Hearing Berlioz' Faust story in German brings out the Goethe, particularly during "D'amour l'ardente flamme" which uses almost the same text as "Gretchen am Spinnrade."
- Hans Hotter is a colorful devil.
- Elisabeth Schwarzkopf never gets a chance to let her sterling soprano soar in the role of Margherete, but still finds the poetry in the words and the music.
- Wilhelm Furtwängler handles the score with delicacy and precision.
Cons:
- None to mention
