Certainly when anyone mentions great Cio-Cio-Sans of the past fifty years Renata Scotto will be on the short list. It is also arguable that she continued to sing it past the time she should have but in 1964 she was in amazingly fresh voice and achieves the impossible by successfully conveying a teenage girl while meeting the vocal demands of the part. Her performance is incredibly generous of spirit and her style, as always, is impeccable. George Shirley sings Pinkerton, a part that he did often. Puccini seems perfect for his rich voice and he distinguishes himself in a role that is often an after-thought. The sound is good.
