Cilea: L'Arlesiana - Tegani, Oncina, Pederzini, Protti; Del Cupolo. Milano, 1951

Listen to a Sample:

Francesco Cilea was still in his early thirties when he wrote his first version of L'Arlesiana, and he would spend the next forty years tinkering with it.  Having never heard this opera other than the tenor aria, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the music is traditionally pleasing at times and other times flirting with some of the innovations of its day (or days given its extended gestation).  As Federico, Juan Oncina delivers a moving performance including his famous aria.  Emma Tegani sings Vivetta, and Gianna Pederzini, nearing the end of her illustrious career, assumes the part of Rosa Mamai.  Aldo Protti is superb as Baldassare.  Despite some scratchiness from the transfer of from the LP, the sounds is clear.
