For those of you who saw performers of this caliber on stage, I have to say I envy you.   I have seen many good singers sing in this opera but Franco Corelli and Giulietta Simionato not only sing gloriously, they sell it.  For example when Santuzza curses Turridu, more often than not these days sopranos (and mezzos) use it as a chance to show off their chest voice.  With Simionato you can hear the anguish and heartbreak in her voice.   Simionato sings tirelessly throughout which is doubly remarkable given that she was already in her fifties.  Corelli sings like a god.  The first thirty seconds of the prelude is missing.
