The 60s and 70s were a time of great abundance in American Opera. New York City Opera was fostering talent that then went out and pollinated opera houses in cities big and small throughout the country. It was through this phenomenon that we find Marisa Galvany and Placido Domingo offering performances worthy of the world's greatest opera houses in Hartford. Galvany's throbbing soprano, electric stage presences and seemingly endless vocal range make her an ideal Santuzza and paired with the red-hot Turridu of Placido Domingo, the Hartfordians were treated to a taste of verismo at its very best. The sound is very good. Oh, and listen for the fantastic high C that Galvany interpolates at the end of the Santuzza-Alfio duet...
