I have to admit that I wasn't expecting much from this recording and wound up completely blown away. I had always thought of Hans Hopf as a sturdy heldentenor and not much else. Given the chance at some Italian music, he shows that he really knew how to sing. His b flats are virile and spot on and he shows that he knew a thing or two about creating a legato line. The other revelation was the Maddallena of Marianne Schech. Her voice is wild in the same way as Leonie Rysanek's although coming across as slightly cleaner and more slender. When she opens up her top it is almost rapturous. The sound is very good.
