I have waited a while for a complete recording of Tristan und Isolde to come my way featuring the great but under-recorded Ludmila Dvořáková. I am happy to report that her performance as Isolde does not disappoint. To say that Isolde is a punishing role is an understatement. She is on stage for almost the entire evening, singing dramatic vocal writing that makes frequent trips to the top of a soprano’s range. Few sopranos sing this part and even fewer are able to convey Isolde’s fiery determination in Act I and lush sensuality in Act II as well as Dvořáková. As Tristan, Ticho Parly starts out strong but by Act III is pretty much muscling out the numerous high As. Hertha Töpper’s warm mezzo-soprano proves well-suited to Brangäne and Franz Crass offers a dignified Marke. Fernando Previtali makes much of this opera’s unique brand of romanticism. The sound is generally good, although there is some occasional ghosting.
