It is always rare when you can cast a Wagner Opera with singers who actually can convincingly convey youth on stage. Refreshingly in this production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg youthful energy bursts off the stage from the Eva of Anja Silja and the Walther of Jess Thomas giving Wagner's most human opera added vitality and added poignancy when the elder Sachs realizes that he must relinquish his dreams of a live with Eva. Otto Wiener's baritone copes very well in the role of Sachs and he is supported by an extremely colorful cast of Meistersingers. When I first saw that Thomas Schippers was conducting this performance I braced myself for an incredibly brisk interpretation. However, this performance is far from over-caffeinated and Schippers shows that he can convey the breadth in Wagner's melodies. The sound is very good.
