This Ariadne auf Naxos is an interesting mix of the old and the new. Lisa Della Casa was one of the original "Strauss singers," winning the praise of Richard Strauss himself. Here at the age of 50 she shows that she still has the chops to sing Ariadne's notoriously difficult lines and brings her years of experience to the proceedings. New-comer Tatiana Troyanos brings youthful exuberance to the part of the composer, a role that she would come to own or the next twenty years. Reri Grist combines charm and vocal mastery over Zerbinetta. The sound is good.
