In the mid-seventies Renata Scotto started to move into heavier parts which eventually took a toll on the quality of her voice. Here, as Leonora, she still has the silky sheen of her youth. She manages the role well without pushing her voice beyond its means. Besides Joan Sutherland, I cannot think of a soprano who manages the florid parts as well. Carlo Cossutta is admirable as Manrico. His voice is burnished and has no trouble with the high notes. Sherrill Milnes is effective also as di Luna, bringing his signature snarl to the part. Viorica Cortez did not have a huge international career but she sings very beautifully as Azucena. The sound is very good.
