Verdi: Un Ballo in maschera (In German)
Konya, Berthold, Constantin, Peters, Mödl; Sanzogno
Hamburg, 1965
$9.95
Description:
This performance, originally produced for German television, may not be the most quintessential example of Italianate style, but it nonetheless boasts an impressive cast of great singers.
Among them, Sandor Kónya comes closest to capturing the essence of Italian style, even while singing in German. Charlotte Berthold, a strikingly beautiful performer, possesses a voice to match her glamour, with a particularly radiant top that shines throughout. Roberta Peters is an absolute delight as Oscar, bringing sparkle and agility to the role, while Martha Mödl delivers a wonderfully campy and theatrical Ulrica, adding a unique charm to the production.
While the linguistic shift may alter some of the opera’s character, the vocal excellence on display makes this a performance well worth experiencing.
